SRP success in the North Sea

November 2009

After a contract Award in 2008 to Subsea Riser Products and Claxton Engineering Services, sister companies within the Acteon Group, SRP was contracted to execute system design, component design and riser manufacture of a full bore 5000psi drilling riser system for a North Sea operator. This system was successfully delivered in 2009 and drilling operations commenced in Q1 2010, serviced by Claxton Engineering.

The riser system has now been successfully deployed, retrieved and redeployed a number of times, with the client stating that “…all riser components supplied by SRP performed extremely well…” – proving SRP’s HP riser manufacture capability.

The flanged riser was optimized specifically for harsh North sea conditions, including an SRP designed compact flange face with face contact profiled the maximize the capacity for dynamic loading. The preload values were also optimized to minimize the number of bolts whilst ensuring flange face contact and sealing in the most extreme loading conditions. This resulted in a compact flange with only half the required bolts compared to an API flange. This was coupled with a 100% bolt tensioning system, enabling the make-up/ break-up times to be significantly reduced to the extent that they were comparable to low pressure drilling riser connection types.

SRP have also successfully delivered a 12,200psi full bore drilling riser system although this has yet to be deployed.
